Nardini Grappa Ruta is distilled from the pomace of Pinot, Tokay and Cabernet grapes and then infused with rue, a bitter herb that gives this unusual grappa an astringent flavour. Appropriately, each bottle of Ruta includes an infused sprig of rue.
Back in the 1700’s when Nardini was established, grappa was called ‘acquavita’, meaning ‘water of life’, due to its perceived curative properties. Grappa was used to treat everything from fevers, aches and pains to intestinal problems. Nardini Acquavite di Vinaccia Ruta (to give it its original Italian name) takes this a step further by infusing the grappa with rue (Ruta in Italian), a strongly scented evergreen subshrub long used to aid digestion. In Italy rue is traditionally also thought to have Viagra-like properties, which perhaps explains why this infused grappa has been so popular for over 100 years.
