Plymouth is made in a 7,000 litre copper pot still which has been in regular use at the distillery for over 150 years. The seven botanicals used in order of dominance are: juniper, coriander, lemon peel, sweet orange peel, sweet angelica, orris root and cardamom. No bitter botanicals are used.

Plymouth unveiled new packaging in April 2006 with an Art Deco-style bottle and modern labelling which shocked many loyal followers of the brand (including us) due to its radical change from its previous identity. The previous bottle was old-fashioned in style, with a jovial monk printed on the reverse of the back label: once his feet were dry, it was said to indicate it was time to buy another bottle.

Loyal drinkers were relieved when yet another radically different but this time 'old-fashioned' rounded-shouldered bottle emerged in January 2012 (released January 2013 in UK). This prominently returned the square-rigged Mayflower to the front label with the monk now white sticker on the back of the bottle so visible through the bottle as a ghost-like image to the bottom right of the oval label, inverted horseshoe-like label. With this packaging change came a repositioning in the gin's price as a super-premium.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 15/02/2020

Appearance:

Crystal Clear.

Aroma:

Juniper notes of pine, lavender and camphor with lemon zest, sage and eucalyptus.

Taste:

Fresh zingy piney juniper with zesty lemony bite and orange ripeness; character and interest are enhanced by more subtle rooty notes with fresh coriander and mild white pepper spice.

Aftertaste:

Refreshing pine freshness lingers with subtle white pepper and liquorice-like rootyness.

Overall:

Classic London dry in style with zesty lemony bite and orange ripeness. Well-balanced and reliably consistent. One of the oldest and best gin names.
