Made from wheat and flavoured with traditional botanicals including citrus, orris root, liquorice and, of course, juniper alongside contemporary ingredients such as white peach, raspberry and Turkish rose. The more contemporary botanicals are introduced as essences made by a French flavour house.

The Nolet family have been distillers in Schiedam, Netherlands since 1691 and with over 320 years of genever distilling experience they are well qualified to make a gin. Since assuming the role of chairman in 1979, Carolus Nolet'sr. has also proved his family's mastery of marketing with the astounding success of its Ketel One Vodka brand which he introduced in 1983.

Carolus represents the 10th generation of the Nolet distilling family and this is celebrated with his name, and that of his ancestors, listed on both sides of the bottle of this gin below an embossed family crest. Launched in 2010, the glossy, dark green - almost black - bottle is almost regal in its understated style and is crowned with a weightily polished steel screw cap.

The traditional botanicals are individually distilled in a custom built small copper pot still called 'Ketel 19'. Commissioned in 2009 and built by Holstein in Germany, this pot still links to a small five plate column still (the plates of which can be independently open or closed) before passing to the condenser. Each botanical is macerated for a minimum of 24 hours before being brought to the boil. The highly concentrated flavoured distillates produced are stored in large teardrop-shaped glass containers for eventual blending with neutral spirit and the other botanicals to made Nolet's gin.

Each batch of newly blended Nolet's Silver Dry Gin is left for a period of several days to marry in the stainless steel blending tank before being tested and approved by a member of the Nolet family.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 09/12/2021

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

A splash of water opens perfumed floral rose petal/Turkish delight and cherryade with subtle herbal and fruit aromas.

Taste:

Similarly rose petal/Turkish delight-influenced palate has raspberry, black pepper and a drying blast of piney juniper and earthy orris root.

Aftertaste:

Long finish brings interplay between fruity, floral, rooty, piney and peppery flavours.

Overall:

Distinctly different but some traditionalists may find this full-flavoured gin too contemporary. Those seeking a complex dry gin with floral notes will much appreciate Nolet's Silver. The bottle is beautifully elegant and the gin makes a deliciously floral G&T but go easy on the measure - it's 47.6 alc./vol..
