Released December 2013 and produced for internet retailers ‘Master of Malt’, who coincidently also run The Times Whisky Club, much publicised by the eponymous News Paper. Flavoured with 16 botanicals and made using a copper pot still and also reduced pressure (vacuum) distillation.

The base gin is distilled in a copper pot still with the following nine traditional botanicals: juniper, coriander, orris root, liquorice root, angelica, cassia bark, cinnamon, dried lemon and dried orange peel. Separately another distillate of citrus zests is made using reduced pressure distillation with Clementine, Pomelo, white and pink grapefruit. This second citrus peel distillate is added to the base distillate to bolster the gin’s citrus flavour.

Each wax sealed bottle is individually numbered with a label featuring The Times lion lying on juniper branches.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 24/12/2013

Appearance:

(sample bottle No. 000240) Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Herbaceous and citrusy with liquorice and subdued juniper. Grapefruit zest and angelica seeds (hop-like/celery-like) are particularly pronounced. Water reveals even more citrus.

Taste:

Clean, citrusy and spicy. Dilution appears to upset this gin’s balance, amplifying spice and bitter citrus notes.

Aftertaste:

Bitter citrus pith and pine finish.
