Founded by Will Turnage in July 2015, Hawthorn’s London Dry Gin is produced to a recipe created by his late grandfather, Royal Navy Commander Michael Wallrock, during the Second World War.

Michael Wallrock was decorated numerous times for his bravery and apparently used to distil is own elicit gin to take to sea . He boasted that he’d been sunk three times without getting his feet wet.

Beware, the European bottling of this gin is a mere 37.5% alc./vol. while the “Imported” U.S. version is a more respectable 41% alc./vol.. This review is for the 37.5% alc./vol. product.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 24/04/2016

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Peppery spice, piney juniper, coriander, angelica root, nutty woody notes and light zesty orange.

Taste:

Superbly clean. Pine and cracked black peppery juniper rightly dominates with supporting coriander, angelica and zesty citrus. A faint but distinctive mint-like freshness.

Aftertaste:

Piney juniper, peppery spice and that pleasing spearmint-like freshness.

Overall:

Classic London dry in style with peppery spice and an almost spearminty Tic-Tac like freshness.
