Distilled at Trinidad's legendary Caroni Distillery in February 1998, before the closure of the nearby state-owned sugar plantation caused the distillery to close in 2002. This rum was aged for 15 years on the island until 22nd September 2013 when it was sent to be bottled in Scotland (in Nov 2013).
The label is a reproduction of an original Caroni bottle from the 1940s. Due to the collapse of the country's sugar industry, this is one of the last rums to be distilled from Trinidadian molasses.
Sampled on 19/07/2014
Clear, coppery amber with burnished copper glints.
Orange zest, dried apricot, asphalt-like molasses, vanilla, lemon cake and nutmeg with faintly smoky toasty oak.
Robust and full-bodied with dried fruit, dry spicy oak, white pepper, bonfire smoke and vanilla butterscotch. Adding water wrecks the structure, exposing asphalt-like and hot spice.
Dry and slightly smoky with black pepper spice. Perhaps a tad over aged.
