Víti Aquavite is Víti is based on Icelandic barley spirit which is redistilled in a pot still with botanicals native to Iceland such as caraway seeds, rhubarb, angelica root, birch leaves, creeping thyme, Iceland moss, kale and meadow sweet.

Caraway, the main botanical, grows wild in Iceland and the plant is believed to have been brought to the island by Irish monks around 800 AC. Icelandic aquavite distilled with caraway seeds is what the Icelandic’s often refer to as Brännvin (burnt wine) and traditional recipes date back to the 18th century.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 18/09/2015

Appearance:

(sample bottle batch 2, bottle 674, 2015) Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Reminiscent of Kümmel with pungent caraway seeds over an underlying bready base.

Taste:

Strongly flavoured with caraway to the fore with powerful peppery spice, dry piney notes and herbal complexity.

Aftertaste:

Long freshening caraway finish with lingering herbal spice.

Overall:

A grain to glass caraway forward aquavite with an underlying bready base, powerful spice and herbal complexity. Powerful enough for the Viking illustrated on the label.
