William Larue Weller is part of Buffalo Trace’s annual Antique Collection and takes its inspiration and name from the eponymous distiller credited as being the first to produce Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill.

Born in 1825, William Larue Weller was an early distilling pioneer in Kentucky and in 1849, at a time when other distillers were producing rye bourbons; he launched his whiskey made from a blend of corn, malted barley and wheat.

This modern day barrel strength small batch bourbon is made to Weller’s original wheated mash bill by Buffalo Trace from whiskies aged a from 10 to 14 years. It is bottled from a batch of 55 barrels uncut and unfiltered as a limited edition annual release, hence the product and its strength (alc./vol.) varies from year to year.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 19/01/2016

Appearance:

(sample 2015 release) Clear, copper bronze with deep reds.

Aroma:

Oil-paint with custard powder, a touch of lime-marmalade, dry cider, warm cinnamon, red toffee-apple and burnt soft plastic. More apple, lightly smoky and toasty oak with water.

Taste:

Dry, oak chip barbeque and buttery with cedar wood and spice - black pepper and cinnamon. More appley with water.

Aftertaste:

Relatively short with cinnamon, black pepper, dry oak and caramelised cooked apple skin.

Overall:

Pleasing apple fruity notes balance dry spicy oak in this cask-strength well aged bourbon.
