Review

Cashing in on the Latin American theme storming London, Coya is a Peruvian bar and restaurant along the Green Park end of Piccadilly, where modern bar meets ornate South American design elements and grand carved woodwork. The basement site makes for a cleverly transporting immersion that makes the four-lane busy street outside a distant memory.

A well-dressed clientele (this is Mayfair) lines the well-stocked bar, which draws heavily on Peru's national spirit pisco - glass demijohns filled with infused pisco lord it over other central and southern spirits such as tequila and mezcal.

The menu leads with the classic Pisco Sour and, as a benchmark of the bar, it's well-balanced and comes with a nice frothy head, but it's warm down here so imbibe while fresh otherwise the eggy nature becomes more pronounced. Variations include X, Y and Z, while other quirky ingredients include an avocado-spiced Margarita, like liquid guacamole.

A buzzy atmosphere and good-looking staff make for a pleasant day-trip to Peru. Mostly this is a place to see and be seen.
