Review

Nestled in a quiet residential area, a short stroll from Notting Hill Gate, the Hillgate Arms is a welcoming corner neighbourhood pub with friendly staff, a delicious gastro menu and a traditional mahogany central bar.

High ceilings and large Georgian windows give a sense of brightness and airiness, especially on a sunny day. Eclectic art covers the gun metal walls, including a youthful portrait of the Queen in her younger days sits alongside naked girls with Pink Floyd album covers painted on the backs.

There's a good selection of 11 wines by the glass and three ales on draught: Sambrooks Wandle, Sharp's Doombar and Duchars IPA. The food is good, with generous portions, and includes Steak Tartar as a starter, while the main course selection covers everything from a healthy Salade Nicoise to chicken burgers for more hearty appetite. Steaks seem to be something of a speciality and the Hillgate will source any cut of beef... just call ahead and give them 48 hours' notice.

The street-side seating around this corner pub is perfect for whiling away summer evenings but they politely ask customers to move inside after 9.30pm, a considerate illustration of the neighbourhood vibe this pub strives to maintain.
