Review

Although practically hidden in the basement of Galvin Bistro De Lux on Baker Street, and reached only via a tiny stairwell from the middle of the dining room, this bar should not be considered a speakeasy - the concept is passé and there is no secret of its presence. Instead, think of the tiny, leather-bound, mirrored jewel-box of a space - relaunched in October following a makeover - as something reserved for those in-the-know. Inevitably, the bar will appeal to restaurant patrons before or after dinner, but the velvet curtains at the top of the spiral staircase open to all, reservation or not.

As delicious smells waft down from the restaurant above, the restaurant's full wine list is on offer, though Le Cellar sports its own mixologist who, from behind a plush corner bar, focuses on simple classics including the French 75, Negroni, Rum Punch and a faultless Espresso Martini flavoured with amaretto. Tasty small plates whet the appetite and will leave you tinged with regret if you're not sitting down to dinner afterwards, but you'll still benefit from top-end French hospitality.
