Review

The back terrace of this 17th century pub looks directly over the river close to Hammersmith Bridge, making it a favourite viewpoint for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. A Fullers' house, The Dove is also noted for its pub grub and having the smallest bar in Britain at 1.27 x 2.39 metres / 4'2'' x 7'10'' feet (immediately on the right as you enter).

The Dove is hidden down a quiet, narrow alleyway so can be tricky to find. Follow the path upriver on the north bank from Hammersmith Bridge, cross the small park and take the alley on the far side that runs parallel with the river.

Celebrities who have enjoyed a pint here include Graham Greene and Ernest Hemingway. William Morris lived next door and James Thomson, who wrote Rule Britannia, lived and died upstairs.

The interior is cosy with old wooden chairs, stools and benches, plus the requisite low ceiling, black wood panelling and open fire, but while traditional the Dove's interior could not be described as being picturesque.

The British fare (fish & chips, spotted dick and the like) are reliably good, as is the condition of the four draught ales from the Fuller's brewery just down the road.
