Review

Set over Porteño, the award-winning Argentinian restaurant in Surry Hills, Gardel's shares an impressive all-Argentine wine list with downstairs - six pages of Latin American goodness, with over 20 bins available by the glass.

Named for Argentinian tango legend Carlos Gardel, it's an elegantly retro space, with dark wood, twirling ceiling fans, dark red banquettes, black and white photos and a fabulous antique football table. And if you're not up for pork and lamb lovingly slow-cooked for eight whole hours, there's a bar snack menu to complement the asado goodness downstairs.

But there's more than wine to Gardel's. The cocktail list, a well-balanced selection of a few house creations plus some popular and lesser-known classics, is well done. And the Porteño Piña Colada, made with the juice of charred pineapple, Tiki bitters, coconut ice cream and Pampero, is to die for.
