A word-of-mouth bar found behind a shop front in Singapore, 28 Hong Kong Street offers American style drinks, food and décor with a vibe that starts relaxed and gradually grows more lively throughout the night.

Review

This speakeasy is widely regarded as one of the world's very best bars. Like the theme, the décor is heavily influenced by American bars, as are the classically-led spirituous cocktails. Hardly surprising considering the influence of one of the partners, Michael Callahan, originally a leading talent in the San Francisco bar scene.

It would not be a speakeasy-style bar if it were easy to find and 28 HongKong Street lies behind a non-descript 1960s shop front. The capacity is limited so be sure to call ahead and reserve your allocation of the 60 odd seats - preferably at the curvy bar or one of the booths. Given the limited capacity, thankfully they are usually willing to accommodate a few extras happy to stand. Those after some privacy will want to secure The Office, a secluded space seating a dozen drinkers with its own sound system.

The service, cocktails and overall experience are worthy of its reputation as one of the world's leading bars, but arguably pale into insignificance when compared to the mouth-watering truffle mac-n-cheese balls.
