Review

Attached to the Ace Hotel, this large dining hall with its open kitchen and legendary bar is a restaurant that successfully makes drinkers who have not come here to eat feel equally welcome, and thanks to Bar Manager, Jeffrey Morgenthaler, Clyde Common is better known for its drinks than its very tasty food.

This is one of the busiest spots in Portland. Below the double height ceiling a buzzy atmosphere is created by chattering dinners at the communal cafeteria-style tables and drinkers perched on the vintage stools around the large zinc topped bar. Up in the gallery, dinners have a commanding view over the proceedings below. The decor is utilitarian and the 30-something patrons casually dressed.

Jeffrey was one of the pioneers of both barrel aged and carbonated cocktails and the dozen or so cocktails on the list are either riffs on classics or perfectly executed classics. The food at Clyde is also exceptional, so be sure to have at least a snack at the bar.
