Review

Cooter Browns is a good, honest, unsophisticated sports bar and all the better for it. The locally brewed Abita Andygator is one of some 45 different beers on tap with the wall of glass fronted refrigerators additionally loaded with upwards of 400 brands of domestic and imported bottled brews.

Cooter's was established in 1977. Since then it has gained something of a reputation as a sports bar and beer hall. Lines of tables sit canteen style, cheek by jowl down the middle of the room. Artist Scott Conary's caricatures of deceased celebrities stare down from above, complete with oversized heads and beers in their hands, while two pool tables and a dozen or so large screens provide entertainment as you sup.

Located in Uptown New Orleans, the 35 minute journey from the French Quarter is an adventure in itself as the 'St Charles Street Car' trundles its way practically to the bar's door. Jump on at the stop at the corner of Canal Street and Carondelet and get off as towards the end of the line as the track takes the sharp right turn at Riverbend.
