Review

The much respected Jake Burger after which this bar is named is now to be found fettling his gin still in London's Portobello Road. However, the big man's influence remains and this drinker's institution is as fun, debauched and dangerous as ever.

Originally opened by Jake in 2004, this large basement venue was created by knocking three cellars into one, original white porcelain Victorian tiles still adorn vaulted ceilings. It's far from plush and this real drinker's bar is regularly crammed to the rafters, so late week arrive early to avoid disappointment at the door.

Jake’s is a real drinkers’ bar, where classically inspired cocktails rub shoulders with more contemporary inventions, plenty of beers and more than the odd shot. The already wide selection of premium spirits was bolstered in January 2012 when Tabitha, a 30-litre pot still was installed and Jake’s Bar & Grill was officially renamed Jake’s Bar and Still Room. No matter, to the rest of us it’s still Jake’s Bar, it’s still fun and it still stays open later than most.
