Review

Ascend the staircase to the left of you as you enter the hotel's reception and turn right at the top of the stairs. You may feel that you are on your way to your room for the night but at the end of the corridor lies a vast former ballroom that houses the hotel's bar.

Three huge chandeliers hang from the curvaceous ceiling high above - this room is big enough to house a tennis court, with plenty of room for line judges to sit on the periphery. It's so big that a grand piano looks relatively lost in the far corner of the space, the rest of which is dotted with groups of upright chairs and sofas - surprisingly sparsely. You could drive a car between the chairs and tables in a full circuit of the room. This lack of bustle contributes to a relaxed but refined feel. However, this is not some crusty old hotel bar, evidenced not least by contemporary line drawings adorning its white walls.

A classical cocktail list runs from the Negroni to Queen's Park Swizzle, taking in the likes of a Whiskey Sour on the way, which when ordered was stylishly dry shaken and perfectly balanced.
