Review

This bar, a couple of blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, takes its name from the state flower of California. The golden flowers grow wild throughout California and are known as 'copa de oro', which literally translates as 'cup of gold'. A relaxed atmosphere verges on something of a party bar even on mid-week nights.

The terracotta tiled floor and dark wooden ceiling and bar give the rectangular room a Hispanic feel, while sculptural light fixtures and the works of a resident artist on the walls give it some unique touches. The drinks on our last visit were a 'Happy Depression' celebration of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, from a Bee's Knee's #2, to a Diablo and LA's own Moscow Mule. Although the bar-top is decorated with various small bottles of tinctures and bitters, the emphasis these days is on speed rather than finesse.
