Review

It's the little touches that show there's a decent bartender in charge at Immertreu, from the swizzlestick on the bar-top to the silver chalices some drinks are served in, or the heavy duty cigar lighter that bartender Ricardo Albrecht wields (smoking is legal in Berlin). But more than that, it's the polished technique you witness as the award-winning bartender wields his tools, expertly stirring and shaking drinks: Ricardo is widely held to be one of the brightest talents on the German scene.

Immertreu has only been open for two weeks. Buzz for entry and you'll be admitted into a candlelit lounge swathed in red curtains and leather tub chairs. Ahead lies a long, long, wooden-topped bar stretching in front of you, the contemporary space moodily lit, with a quietly laid-back atmosphere rather than being snootily fashionable, as such a space could easily be.

Ricardo was apologetic for his opening one-sheet cocktail menu, but it's not exactly required as he's happy for you to go off piste, turning out memorable classics, twists and bespoke concoctions. Immertreu translates as 'ever faithful', and we could definitely find ourselves becoming regulars here. Well, if we lived in Berlin, that is.
