Review

The villa that houses Sasha's was built in 1921, and once home to Mei Ling Soon, one of three beautiful sisters who managed to marry the three most powerful men in China.

Mei Ling's catch? Chiang Kai-Shek, who led the anti-Communist Chinese forces during the Second World War and founded Taiwan (AKA the Republic of China) after he lost. Mei Ling would become the first Chinese citizen, and only the second woman, to address the US Congress.

Today, while the splendid structure of the building remains, Sasha's is, effectively, an extremely well-done, upscale gastro-pub, popular for brunch, lunch, barbeques and afternoon and evening sessions in the expansive garden or sprawled on velvet banquettes.

There is a short list of very well-priced wine, fresh fruit martinis and margaritas, plus a few other cocktails, alongside good non-alcoholic options including a mint lemonade, and draft beers including Hoegaarden, Erdinger and Guinness.

Ultra-thin crust pizzas, French-influenced cuisine and Saturday barbeques add up to a very good food offering, though there is a steakhouse upstairs.
