Review

Claiming to be "the oldest pub on the River Thames" and originally named the Shippe, this picturesque Thameside pub was built in 1550. Its modern name celebrates the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers, who set off for the New World seventy years later on board the Mayflower. They departed from moorings behind the pub and the captain who brought the ship home is buried in the graveyard of St Mary's nearby. Sometime in the early 18th century, the Shippe was rebuilt on its original cellars, supposedly using timbers from the Mayflower, whose name it acquired when restored in 1957.

This beautifully renovated and kept hostelry boasts its own jetty built on piles in the river, from which thirty or so drinkers can enjoy views up and down the river, including the site of Execution Dock, where convicted pirates were taken to drown. Inside, the small, wood panelled bar is lined with narrow settles "that fit all buttocks".

Greene King and other guest cask ales are offered alongside a fair wine list. Steaks are something of a speciality and an upstairs restaurant and bar with views over the river can cater for private parties of up to 60 people.
