Review

Housed in a railway arch in the arse-end of Bermondsey, on Saturdays they raise the shutters of this craft brewery and welcome in appreciative discerning drinkers.

Something of a brewery tap you can not only buy bottles and mini-casks directly from the brewery, but the nice folk there will also let you sample before you buy, either with a free taster, or grab yourself a glass and settle in with your friends in the make-shift beer hall in the adjoining arch.

Accommodation and décor is basic to say the least. Folding trestle tables line the bare concrete floor with white corrugated plastic cladding the tunnel-like room. Palettes of boxes containing labels and caps ready for the bottling line are piled high and a breeze block-constructed utilitarian toilet is one of the few concessions to patrons' comfort - so dress warm if coming in winter as heating is not one of them.

What the Kernel lacks in designer comforts it more than makes up by giving an opportunity to enjoy beers in the very place they are brewed, with the brewers not only on hand to talk about their products, but often also offering a tour of the brewing process.
