Ian Schrager, the man who brought us first the legendary Studio 54, then a group of very slick contemporary hotels, among them Miami's Delano, is now back in the hotel business. He brought his distinctive touch to the Gramercy Park Hotel building, which dates back to 1925, when he reopened it in 2007 and has made this one of the most fashionable hotels in Manhattan, with three destination bars.
Of these, the one to angle for is The Private Roof Club and Garden, an inside-outside space on the 15th floor with dramatic ivy trellising. Generally, only hotel guests, members, celebs and guests at the odd PR-friendly event can enjoy the impressive views.
The fallback position is The Rose Bar. While less hip than it was when they turned Paris Hilton away, this still attracts a fashionista crowd and maintains a consequently tough door. Consolation prize is Jade, a small vestibule bar that lies just off the baroque "hunting lodge meets Spanish hacienda" lobby. It is relatively easy to gain access to this, which, like its siblings, offers excellent contemporary cocktails.
