Paul McGee describes his fabulous tiki bar as "A stylish tropical oasis-meets-flotsam strewn island hut, Lost Lake evokes both the glamorous tropical escapism of 1930s Hollywood and the rugged nautical, island aesthetic of the world's first tiki bar — the original Don's Beachcomber Cafe." And that about sums up Lost lake.
Lost Lake is located next to Thank You — an American-Chinese takeaway, and indeed you enter Lost Lake through Thank you - stepping from the brightly lit white takeaway through a doorway into the dimly lit fantasy world of tiki complete with lauhala roof, banana leaf-print wallpaper and the obligatory tiki Gods. Paul describes the décor as "more 1930s tiki than 1960s tiki."
The Chinese takeaway delivers food directly to the tables of Lost Lake but unless you go early you may end up returning home with your food rather than eating while perched upon one of the cherished stools at the bar. Lost Lake might lie out on the Avondale - Logan Square borders but the standard of Paul's drink menu draws an appreciative crowd, so go early as there are no reservations.
The drinks menu pays homage to the tiki greats with numerous original recipes by Paul. As you'd expect all drinks are presented with suitably flamboyant garnishes.
