Style: Cocktail bar
Capturing a relaxed and typically worn-around-the-edges East End atmosphere, Cockney tribute bar Apples & Pears (for our American readers this translates as 'stairs' in Cockney rhyming slang) boasts a pleasant layout with well spaced comfy armchairs inside and a simple backyard terrace beyond. On the ground level the green drop-lights contrast nicely with the London brick wall behind the bar and the slightly tattered furniture. A further bar downstairs was closed on our visit but open on busy weekends.
The menu has some hidden gems combining chillies and spiced rum or lavender and lemon but ultimately the cocktails are focused on fruit-led drinks - rather unimaginative, you might say. Prices range from £7.50 to £7.95. There's more Cockney rhyming slang on the menus.
With chatty friendly bartenders and quick delivery service was exceptional and ambience fun yet chilled. Posters in the bathrooms give a clue that on weekend nights DJs up the pace and the atmosphere. Otherwise it's great if you're in the area after work and fancy a comfy sit down alongside a drink.
