Behind the Doge's Palace and overlooking the lido sits the Danieli Hotel. Built in the 14th century, this palace became a hotel in 1822. The Dandolo Bar sits in one of the most fabulous lobbies in the world. From here bartenders in white tuxedoes dispense drinks to similarly dressed bellboys who ferry orders back and forth to those admiring the ornate interior in the large lounge area.
While the setting is one of the most fantastic in the world, sadly the drinks are pretty ordinary but classic cocktails are reliably good. The wine list (as with other Venetian hotels in the Starwood group) is brand-led and uninteresting. Oh, it's also bloody expensive. All that said, please pop in and enjoy a drink here. For architecture and people watching the place is world beating.
