Jackknife Bar

With its toasted raw oak floor there's something of the look of a Wild West salon to this large bar which is attached to the Sentinel Hotel. Walk past the large brick fireplace and the secluded tables behind to the sweeping 65ft long marble-topped bar counter backed by an altar-like back bar with a line of 24 beer fonts mirroring the selection of dozen beers on draught.

Jackknife is a great local's high-volume hang-out rather than being a bastion of mixology, and with its heavy rock playlist is perhaps not a place for a first date. Of the 11 cocktails listed seven are house drinks. We can recommend the Left Hand Gun (Del Magauy Vida, Dolin Genepy, grenadine, lime) and the Halo (Bombay Sapphire, Gran Lusso, Nardini Mandorla), at least once the large ice cube it is served over has had a chance to add some dilution. The water station at end of bar is a nice touch.

Food ranges from devilled eggs to the Jackknife burger with a strong selection of American bar snacks and plates.
