The Feijoa is an evergreen shrub or small tree which originates from South America. Its fruit is green, ellipsoid, about the size of a chicken's egg and closely-related guava. In New Zealand the Feijoa is a common garden shrub and the fruit is considered something of a delicacy.
To say Feijoa fruit have a distinctive smell is an understatement – they stink. Apparently this is due to the methyl benzoate and related compounds.
Sampled before 1st May 2011
Crystal clear.
The nose smells of disinfectant mouthwash with hints of mint.
Like toothpaste, 42 Below Feijoa is refreshing and scarily similar in flavour to that of the fresh fruit.
While I would not choose to drink this with tonic, its distinctive flavour provides interesting cocktail applications.
