Contract distilled in England using a traditional pot still but untraditional botanicals such as dragon eye (longan), poppy and lotus leaves. More conventional of the 12 botanicals include: lemon peel, almond, cassia, lavender, orris, liquorice, angelica, coriander and, of course, juniper.
As befits the name (inspired Sir Winston Churchill's British "Bulldog Spirit"), Bulldog Gin's stubby grey glass bottle has a studded collar around its wide neck (which accommodates a standard sized pourer) finished with an oversized mat black plastic screwcap.
Launched in October 2006, Bulldog Gin is owned by the Bulldog Gin Company which was founded by Anshuman Vohra, previously a banker with JPMorgan.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 02/03/2016
Appearance:
Crystal clear.
Aroma:
Piney juniper with floral lavender, musky nutty angelica and lime zest.
Taste:
Pleasingly dry yet soft with piney woody juniper rightly to the fore, generous nutty angelica and mellow black pepper spirity spice.
Aftertaste:
Well-balanced botanical elements give character and structure. Lingering nutty angelica and cracked black pepper.
Overall:
Bulldog is led by piney juniper, as in classically styled London dry gins, but with a soft mouthfeel, pronounced nuttiness and delicate floral notes.
