Launched in 1895, Gran Centenario was so named to commemorate the turn of the new century. Gran Centenario is a 100% agave tequila made from 10-12 year old agave plants harvested from the Highlands region. Aged at least six months in new French Limousin oak casks using Selección Suave aging.
In 1858, Lazaro Gallardo, a tavern owner and tequila producer, started using an ageing process which has since become known as Selección Suave. Literally translating as 'soft selection' this involves blending young tequilas with well-aged tequilas. In 1895, Lazaro Gallardo named his tequila Gran Centenario to commemorate approaching turn of the new century.
In 1920, Lazaro's son, Luciano started bottling Gran Centenario, which up to that time had only been sold from the cask in the family's tavern. Inspired by the Art Deco style of architecture, he designed a bottle similar to the one still used to this day.
