Effen is stylishly presented in a rubber sleeve-covered bottle. Each seamless rubber sleeve is handmade and hand-applied one bottle at a time by spraying with water and then slipping over the bottle. No adhesive is required as once applied the rubber sleeve sits within a valley in the bottle.
Launched in the US in 2003 and then in the UK in September 2006, Effen is named after a Dutch term meaning 'smooth, even and balanced'. The vodka is distilled from wheat grown in Northern Holland using a continuous distillation process. Its makers claim their vodka "is distilled at much lower temperatures than other luxury vodkas to avoid 'caramelisation' of the distillate". They apparently also use a 'bottom-up' filtration process which forces the liquid through peat rather than the more typical charcoal.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 15/12/2011
Appearance:
Clear (but with platelet particles in bottle).
Aroma:
Neutral, mineral nose gives little away.
Taste:
Very clean palate with only cracked black pepper spirit spice offering any discernible flavour. For those who like their vodka clean and neutral this is almost impossible to fault.
Aftertaste:
Clean, long cracked blacked pepper finish.
