This cognac-based liqueur is flavoured with natural black vanilla beans from Madagascar. SADLY NAVAN WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2011 so is no longer available.

The pot still-shaped bottle depicts a vanilla flower with tendrils curling round the bottle. Navan was produced by the makers of Grand Marnier using the same cognac base as their famous Gordon Rouge liqueur.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 02/05/2012

Appearance:

Clear, golden yellow.

Aroma:

Aromatic vanilla extract and eaux de vie with butter pastry (croissants) and faint coffee bean.

Taste:

Surprisingly spicy (cracked red peppercorns and hot chilli spice) palate, with pronounced vanilla - flat alcoholic cream soda with a hint of orange zest and stewed black English breakfast tea.

Aftertaste:

Long concentrated vanilla fudge with lingering chilli spice-like heat.

Overall:

Not the mild mannered, easy McDonnald's-style milkshake vanilla flavour you might expect to find in lesser vanilla liqueurs.
