In 1884 Lionello Stock and his partner Carlo Camis started distilling brandy in Trieste to capitalise on the gap in the world market created when the phylloxera pest decimated Cognac’s vineyards. Lionello Stock created this liqueur made by infusing oranges in his brandy.
Unusually Gran Gala is based on Italian aged brandy and three different varieties of orange: Valencia and two others which the makers wish to keep secret, rather than just the dry orange peels used in most other orange liqueurs.
Sampled on 15/09/2012
Clear, caramel appearance with traces of golden syrup.
Orange oil with hints of wood, grape and white pepper. Hint of chemical soap (Swarfega-like).
Immediately hot with swathes of dusty chocolate orange and tobacco rather than fresh citrus and brandy.
Dulls through the finish leaving bitter-sweetness.
