Launched in 1987 (along with La Trappe Dubbel), this powerful Trappist beer is brewed using coriander which gives the beer a slightly spicy character. The monks which oversee its production recommend a serving temperature between 10-14ºC.
Sampled on 07/01/2012
Slight haze, orange-amber with thick lasting head which leaves lacing in its wake.
Yeasty fruity nose (overripe banana, Cox apple, zesty orange and pink grapefruit) with caramel and a touch of bubble-gum.
Nothing bland about this bittersweet brew. Hugely flavoured palate with malt aplenty, apple and orange fruitiness, a citrusy bite and a hint of coriander spice. Alcohol shows but belies its 8% strength.
Aftertaste: Citrusy banana cake and spice finish.
