Jewel of Russia Ultra's square decanter-style bottle is something of a work of art, with a traditional Russian hand-painted Palekh lacquered miniature scene on each bottle, individually signed and numbered by the artist.

According to its makers, Jewel of Russia Ultra is made from winter wheat and rye using "ancient recipes", but due to modern rectification, "special proprietary techniques are used to restore the original historic taste of Russian vodka". Their press release back on 25-July 1995 states that part of that proprietary technique is that "fructose and aroma spirit of wheat crusts" are part of the recipe.

Made at the OST-Alco distillery near the town of Chernogolovka in Russia's Moscow district. The distillery draws its water from artesian wells which are 344 and 557 feet deep.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 22/01/2012

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Clean cracked black pepper corn spirity nose with faint aniseed, lemon zest and bready aromas.

Taste:

Starts slightly oily and sweet, going some way to counter aggressive black pepper spirity attack. Faint bread, grain and what I can only describe as artificial lemony notes struggle for attention over the peppery spice.

Aftertaste:

Black pepper spice dominates the finish.
