This winter ale is only available October to March. It's a classic Russian Imperial Stout, modelled on the dark, strong beers British brewers made for the Czar’s court during the 19th century. The chocolate aroma and flavour is achieved by blending six varieties of malts, some very heavily roasted.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 30/09/2012

Appearance:

(best before Sep-14) Dark mahogany, almost black with ruby edges, thick beige head and heavy lacing.

Aroma:

Bitter chocolate with espresso coffee and liquorice.

Taste:

Like Guinness on steroids, as strong in flavour as it is high in alcohol with bitter dark chocolate, burnt roast coffee and strong espresso coffee.

Aftertaste:

Long treacle and bitter cacao dry finish. Imperial Stouts are something of an acquired taste.
