The design inspiration for this 1978 Vintage draws from the Norse influence on Orkney, in the form of five unusual woodcarvings that were discovered during a 1904 Norwegian archaeological dig – they were topped with fantastic creatures with snarling mouths.
The beast’s head depicted is considered the masterpiece of a craftsman named ‘the Academician’ and it has an open mouth with bared teeth, a square snout and large eyes. The back of the neck are covered with a series of birdlike figures intertwined in an elaborate pattern.
This is the fifth release in the Highland Park Vintage Collection and follows releases in 1998, 1994, 1990 and 1973.
