Lying 50km west of Sapporo City in southern Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four principal islands, Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malts using coal-fuelled direct-fired pot stills. This example has been matured for 10 years or more in mainly new American oak casks.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 07/05/2012

Appearance:

Clear, mid golden amber with polished golden highlights.

Aroma:

Leathery salty peat. With a splash of water peach and banana fruity aromas emerge.

Taste:

Peaty but elegantly so with vegetal vanilla, cacao, tobacco and invigorating spice. Be sure to go easy on the splash of water as over dilution kills that all important spice.

Aftertaste:

Fruity notes balance more than match up to the peat and oak in a graceful, slightly floral finish.
