First brewed in 2008, Adnams describes this beer as a cross between a dark mild and an old fashioned brown ale. Gunhill is brewed from a blend of four different malts.

Adnams says the toffee, chocolate and spicy flavours come from “the Chocolate, Crystal and Aromatic malted barleys and the sweetness left from the Tipple malted barley is balanced by the bitterness from the Boadicea hops”.

A proportion of the revenue from the sale of Gunhill is donated to The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Review and Tasting

Sampled before 1st May 2011

Appearance:

Clear, very dark red-brown with quick fading medium beige head.

Aroma:

Moderate malty, toffee, berry, vanilla notes. Malty caramel wwith prunes, instant coffee granules and dark chocolate.

Taste:

Moderately bitter, full flavoured with pronounced dark roasted mocha coffee, burnt raisons, sweet coffee cake, bitter chocolate and good hop bite. Fullness of flavour and character contradicts its relatively low alcohol strength.

Aftertaste:

Long, strong espresso coffee and bitter chocolate finish with faint tar notes.
