Martell brandy was first made in South Africa in 1964, after the French cognac house granted Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery Group a licence to sell South African produced brandy under the Martel brand name. Today it is owned and produced by Pernod Ricard, also owners of Société Martell & Co SA Cognac.
