Launched in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco at the tail end of 2005, then Diageo’s latest rum offering. It is made by brothers Vicente and Roberto Bastos Ribiero, who are apparently renowned cachaça makers.

Oronoco is distilled from Brazilian sugar cane grown on the lush mountain slopes of Novo Friburgo in the highlands of Rio de Janeiro state. The cane is harvested by hand and crushed within 24 hours of cutting, then the juice is fermented and distilled three times in copper stills. The resulting distillate is aged in Brazilian wood casks and blended with aged molasses based Venezuelan rum.

Oronoco’s very distinctive bottle with a label styled like cellar tasting notes and a thick, embossed leather girdle is clear aimed at the premium end of the market.

Although made in Brasil, Oronoco is bottled in the USA.
