Rauch is German for smoke and this particular smoked beer is a Marzen, a dark brown, full-bodied beer that beer may be brewed only between Autumn and March (Märzen) – a traditionally due to the need to brew in cold weather to help prevent bacterial infections before refrigeration was available.

Appearance:

(bbd Dec.2012) Clear, very dark chestnut brown.

Aroma:

Peaty farmyard dung and smoked ham.

Taste:

Smoky, peaty woody caramel malt, leather and charred toast with faint nutty chocolate and soy sauce.

Aftertaste:

Smoky vegetal peaty finish. Best chased with an Islay malt.
