Aged: Unaged

Darnley's View Spiced Gin is based on neutral wheat spirit and is distilled in a small stainless steel pot still at Thames Distillers in London with ten botanicals: Juniper, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cassia, Grains of Paradise, Ginger, Cumin, Cloves, Coriander Seed and Angelica Root.

Produced for the Wemyss family, whisky merchants whose historic family seat is Wemyss Castle, Scotland. Back in 1565, Mary Queen of Scots first caught sight of her future husband, Lord Darnley through the courtyard window of the Wemyss Castle. This gin is named in recognition of the event.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 09/07/2012

Appearance:

(batch No. 1568) Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Pungent cumin seed spice dominates. Akin to a garam masala influenced London dry gin – only a tad heavy on the garam masala.

Taste:

Traditional London dry gin flavours bravely stand against almost overwhelming garam masala spice to the extent that Darnley's predominantly juniper gin credentials may be questioned by some.

Aftertaste:

Pine needle, cracked black pepper (Grains of Paradise ) and garam masala spice.
