Pronounced ‘Veer-Oo’, Viru is a pilsner-style lager brewed in Estonia using Lithuanian barley and Saaz hops. It is packaged in a distinctive octagonal pyramid-shaped bottle, its colours those of the Estonian flag – blue, black and white.

Viru is the traditional name for an area of land on the Baltic coast which now forms part of northern Estonia. The word itself is thought to come from the Baltic language word meaning ‘man’ (English word ‘virile’).
