Claiming to be the world’s first gin liqueur, Hayman’s 1820 was created by Christopher and James Hayman, direct descendants of James Burrough, founder of Beefeater Gin. The 1820 statement refers to the date when the distillery James Burrough acquired was first established.

Hayman’s use their usual ten botanicals to create a gin but a touch of sugar adds the sweetness associated with a liqueur. Lunched in 2004, Hayman’s 1820 is popular in Spain where the extra sweetness is appreciated when mixed with tonic water.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 15/07/2012

Appearance:

Clear, transparent.

Aroma:

Gin-like pine-ey juniper and fresh orange zest with white pepper spice.

Taste:

Clean, sweet and easy on the palate. Zesty orange followed by subtle juniper and spice. While obviously a liqueur, Hayman’s is not overly sweet.

Aftertaste:

Gin-like finish but with bitter resiny notes subdued by lingering icing sugar flavour.
