The Olifant (Elephant) brand of genever dates from 1841 when the of J.J Melchers Wz Distillery in Schiedam started exporting Olifant Gin to the Dutch African colonies. So the dockworkers would recognise their barrels and to overcome the language barrier they were branded with an Elephant logo.
The bottle was restyled in December 2006 but the stout square bottle-shape retained, although a round bottle is also available.
Sampled on 22/07/2012
Clear, transparent.
Subdued, subtle juniper and green tea with faint cedar and nuts.
Not as flavourful as some other jonge jenevers, Olifant’s palate features cedary, nutty notes, alongside juniper, black olives, green tea and spice.
Slight oily and nutty with lingering pine-ey juniper and spice.
