Released in March 2012, this Millésimé champagne comes from what Mumm described as an “exceptional year”. 2004 was relatively dry with above average temperatures and a below-average rainfall led to exceptional grape maturity.
A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay with wines from the Grand Cru Pinot Noir villages of the Montagne de Reims dominating. Mumm say “Verzenay was added for freshness, Mailly for delicacy, Bouzy for balancing power, mellowed by the rounder crus of Ambonnay and Verzy.” The blend also contains Pinot Noir from the Marne Valley (Grand Cru Aÿ and Premier Cru Avenay).
Drink now or cellar until 2023.
Sampled on 09/08/2012
Clear, pale golden with persistent small bubbles.
Yeasty, dairy nose with quince/dates, blackforest gateau and faint jarred sauerkraut-like notes.
Berry and citrus complimented by a honeyed sweetness with buttered croissant.
Biscuit, honeysuckle and croissant.
