Named after an 18th century slang word for strong or old ale, this bottle conditioned ale is fermented in Yorkshire stone squares and aged in oak casks for over a year in Sam Smith’s underground cellars. Yeast and sugar are added when bottled to induce a second fermentation in the bottle.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 26/04/2014

Appearance:

(sample best before Jun/15) Hazy, deep mahogany amber with thick beige creamy head and heavy lacing.

Aroma:

Treacle, toffee, nuts, yeast and dried fruit/Christmas pudding with honey and oak.

Taste:

Burnt Christmas pudding, stewed apple, prunes, toffee apple, subtle oak and treacle with light barbeque charcoal bitterness and faint liquorice. Alcohol bite evident.

Aftertaste:

Treacle, fudge, prunes and burnt Christmas pudding with liquorice, mocha coffee and slightly spicy tannic oak. One for aficionados - far from mass market appeal.
