The Old Fitzgerald bourbon brand was named after John E. Fitzgerald, who, according to a family biography of Pappy Van Winkle, was a bonded treasury agent, so permitted to carry keys to the ageing warehouses and often helped himself to some of the best bourbons.
Larceny is a wheated bourbon, meaning that wheat is the second major grain in the mashbill after corn (rather than rye): 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted Barley
Larceny is blended from batches of 100 or fewer barrels aged 6 to 12 years on the upper floors (4 to 6) of Heaven Hill's rick houses.
Sampled on 03/03/2016
Clear, deep coppery amber.
Brown bread, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla fudge, butterscotch, almond and light Christmassy spice.
Honeyed buttery caramel, black pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon spice.
Blackened sweetcorn, maple syrup and toasty oak with black peppered, nutmeg and cinnamon spice.
Full-bodied, lightly spicy, toasty and characterful with a natural sweetness that makes this whiskey very quaffable, to the extent that its best enjoyed neat.
